'Cow-worn corners' It is all about the details in this Somerset barn conversion. Stones lifted from the corners of existing walls were treated with quiet reverence, as they carry a memory of this building's history. Worn smooth by the flanks of dairy cows, who once scratched and leaned against the barn's inner columns, their softened edges speak of the daily rhythms of the barn. Oh, we love a staircase. This sweeping, semi-circular staircase brings drama and light to this Somerset barn conversion. The steel handrail and balustrade remind us of a fossilised ammonite. There is something so satisfying about the relationship between the cast concrete treads, the steel and the light. Light feels like the third material in this space. What we love most about this staircase is that it was cast and polished on site by the self build client. Our Somerset multi-generational barn conversion looks particularly good on this blustery spring day. Reclaimed slate cladding has a beautiful patina. The west facing 'really big window' captures the long evening light at this time of year, making the most of golden hour.

Planning has been submitted on this brick kitchen extension. We loved designing this striking brick extension for our clients. The brick mirrors brick details elsewhere in the building and the curved arches take inspiration from the existing garden wall. The brief was to design a garden room that links the newly renovated home to the garden and views beyond. The landscaping and integrated pizza oven add a playful and warm outdoor space that connects indoor and outdoor living. #somersetarchitects #gardenroom #bricks

Striking shadows play on the lime and basalt wall of our office space. Somewhat distracting when we are supposed to be getting work done! Progress on site on this renovation is cracking on. The structure for the porch is starting to really take shape. It's great to see the vision coming together. Which would you choose? These two images show the variation possible when working to the same brief. Option one looks to capture light and warmth in the south facing courtyard. Option 2 looks to embrace the double gable and play with the symmetry of the 2 wings of the building. Both provide the client with the space and internal layout that they wanted but with a very different feel. These two options were created as part of a concept design stage. This allowed the client to pick and choose from the 2 schemes and identify their priorities for the project. We are divided. Seeing progress on site as our clients move through the building process is so satisfying. This open, light filled hallway with a bespoke made staircase at the centre will become a fantastic focal point of the home. Watching the design come to life on site is one of the true pleasures of being with the client throughout both the design and build process. It also allows us to consult on finishes and fine details that bring a good design to the next level.
